Swivel uses Creative Commons-licensed photos represented by the purple line (by-2.0) for images around the site (user avatars, data set and column images, and graph bling). Most people seem to go for the more restrictive license: Attribution, Non-Commercial, No Derivatives (by-nc-nd-2.0), the blue line. —brian

what's this little cut between july and september in the by-nc-sa and by-nc-nd curves? ;)

i was wondering that too. i assume the data is cumulative. so it might be an issue with a little spec of dirty data.

This is quite cool Brian. Yes, there is info on the CC wiki about other metrics which could be used to plot graphs:

http://wiki.creativecommons...

Also, Mike Linksvayer blogged this on CC's blog: http://creativecommons.org/...

rejon, that page is a great resource too. I also added it as comment on the original data set (http://swivel.com/data_sets...). i'll also see if we can get it into a form that will be plottable by Swivel.

Cool! Where did you get the data for flickr at? What we really need is regular data about our licenses on google, microsoft live search and yahoo plotted. That would rule! This site is amazing! Please ping me if CC can help as well (I handle community+bizdev for cc)

I've been saving a copy of the Flickr's Creative Common page for the past year. Once a year had elapsed I pulled out the numbers reported for each day.

I'm not sure what the dips are in the graph, possibly erroneous output from Flickr, or perhaps a massive removal of the CC licenses from photos.

I was wondering how you got this! I even asked people at flickr and they said you must be tracking it on your own. It is a great use of an API! Very creative.

The interesting number, IMHO, is not the growth of CC licenses at Flickr in absolute terms (of course it is going up) but the growth relative to non-CC works in the system.

Are a larger percentage of works under CC licenses? Are a larger percentage moving to the more free licenses?

These are interesting questions I would love to see asked.

that would be interesting to see. if any one has the overall flickr data. they can upload it, then use the compare feature to add it to this graph.

It'd be cool to have the full name of the license, or a link to more information, attached to each line.

rictic, you should leave that comment on the data set so the data set owner can add it. if you click on the data set name in the legend you it will take you to the data set home page.
